Director says threats ahead of midterms are coming from China, Russia, and Iran.
Jen Easterly, the head of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, said government agencies are concerned about the rise of disinformation campaigns originating from Russia, China, and Iran ahead of the November midterms. She said those nation-state actions are attempting to influence the election.
She stated, “We think about these adversaries that are trying to sow discord… that are trying to undermine the integrity of our elections.” She said that a report from a cybersecurity firm found that a pro-Chinese disinformation group has been targeting the U.S. by attempting to discredit the U.S. political system and discourage Americans from voting in the midterms.
The FBI has also warned that Chinese hackers are scanning the state parties’ headquarters for vulnerable systems they could potentially attack ahead of the midterm elections. However, the respective political parties have said that their election systems have not been compromised.
